When construction began on this Skyrail through Queensland’s rainforest in 1994, leaf litter and top soil were collected from the proposed site. Alongside, plant seedlings were catalogued, removed and propagated, before 7.5 km of cableway were installed. Along with 32 towers, viewing stations, boardwalks, compostable toilets, rainwater tanks and solar panels. The seedlings were then re-planted along with the top soil and leaf litter, and out of this grew one of the world’s leading ecotourism attractions. Skyrail is still a journey into a world of conservation and education. Following its commercial success, its charitable arm, the Skyrail Rainforest Foundation began in 2005, funding local rainforest research. At this rate, Skyrail is destined to stay on the right track for many years to come.
