PATA Team Members participating in Earth Hour

by Laura Freeman, Sustainability Associate, PATA.

On Saturday night the PATA team turned off their lights for one hour to show support for Earth Hour, a global event which celebrates our planet and harnesses the power of collective action to change climate change.

There were over 1.2 million individual actions taken in 2016 and we are proud to say that PATA was a part of this result.

It is extremely important for businesses and organisations today to support and participate in events such as Earth Hour. There has never been a more important time to take action on climate change for the health of our planet.

As an international tourism association, we are able to reach further, influencing organisations and businesses that we work with. We are able to influence our networks and followers and most importantly, our own team.

It is also important that leaders of an organisation or business supports and encourages participation in events such as Earth Hour. With their leadership, the team is empowered and more likely to jump on board.

2016 is undoubtedly the most critical year to take action on climate change. So the question is – will your business be participating?

Earth Hour is the world’s largest grassroots movement for the environment charged by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF). Each year it inspires and empowers people around the world to use their power to “change climate change.”

An initiative developed in Sydney, Australia in 2007, Earth Hour has gathered incredible momentum over the years and in 2015 saw 172 countries and territories taking part. Earth Hour is unique because it unites people regardless of age, gender, religion, or culture, and is effective because it is built on the power of collaborative action.

So how can you get involved? Well, you simply have to turn your lights off for one hour on the 19th of March at 8.30pm local time.

For businesses, especially accommodation providers, this is a great chance to show your support for climate protection. In fact, as a business you are able to have a huge impact – as your action will involve your staff, customers, and even your supply chain partners. It will also show your stakeholders that you care about the planet – and will be a great way to boost your brand.

In preparation for Earth Hour you should:

  •         Register your organisation
  •         Download the How-to Guide
  •         Download the Starter Kit
  •         Check out the 2015 Earth Hour report
  •         See the Hotel’s Guide
  •         Read the All-Round Event Guide

You can also become an official partner – including the opportunity to be part of the Earth Hour Hotel Program which was very successful in 2015.

We strongly encourage PATA members to join us for Earth Hour this Saturday 19 March 2016 and would love to hear from those who will be taking part. To contact us click here.
