Sukau Rainforest Lodge, Malaysia

Best Independent Accommodation – 2015 InSPIRE Awards

Sukau Rainforest Lodge20-room Sukau Rainforest Lodge (SRL) was born from the vision of Albert Teo, Founder and Managing Director of Borneo Eco Tours (BET) of the complete ecotourism experience. As Albert observed “an ecotour without a good ecolodge is not complete”. So he undertook to build a lodge that would provide great wildlife watching experiences and become a base of operations for the Kinabatangan area while also demonstrating sustainable building and operating principles.

Established in 1995, SRL is an ecotourism leader throughout Borneo for over 20 years with the mission to excel as an ecolodge by providing a unique experience in hospitality, interpretation and conservation with local community participation and leadership development. SRL is owned and operated by Borneo Eco Tours. The majority of staff at the lodge (over 80%) are locals. SRL is perched on the bank of the Kinabatangan River in Borneo, one of Asia’s most important waterways. SRL was the first lodge in the area designed based on ecotourism principles. It was built on stilts using Borneo hardwood species and is selfsufficient in water, utilising rainwater and solar energy. Every room has an attached bathroom with solar hot water shower. The lodge provides great wildlife watching experiences while preserving the Kinabatangan flood-plain. Electric motors are used for river safari tours to wildlife areas to minimise air and noise pollution and reduce stress to the wildlife.

SRL is committed to the principle of triple bottom line business (economy, social and environment). Since its foundation in 1995, SRL together with BET run a non-profit organisation, which was registered in 2007 under Borneo Ecotourism Solutions and Technologies (BEST) Society, formerly known as Sukau Ecotourism Research and Development Centre (SERDC) to manage its community and environmental projects. SRL prides itself on being profitable yet contributing to the local community while conserving the environment. SRL has also played host to the delegates for post conference tours of the World Ecotourism Conference in 1999; the WWF Annual Conference 1999 in Kota Kinabalu; the first Asia Pacific Ecotourism Conference (APeco) in 2002 and 2014; and Borneo Ecotourism Conference (BEC) in 2005 convened by Albert Teo. In January 2015, SRL was recognised by National Geographic Society with the prestigious Unique Lodges of the World recognition, making SRL the only lodge in ASEAN with such distinction.
