The study set out to better understand the perceptions and attitudes of urban host communities toward tourists and tourism, and to understand the impacts that were of most concern to these communities in major cities. Outlined below is a summary of key findings from the local government focus groups and community survey.

This study found understanding the strategic value and design of collaborative linkages in tourism is likely to play a significant role in ensuring businesses’ competitiveness and supporting the sustainability of destinations. Its objectives were to determine the factors that hinder and/or foster collaboration between tourism and/or non-tourism businesses; identify the respondents’ perceptions of costs, benefits, risks, current barriers, and potential actions to encourage collaboration in and across regions. It then used the information to identify gaps, future opportunities and possible directions for collaboration in regional areas.

Specifically, the research sheds light on how destinations can increase their competitiveness, and where resources and efforts ought to be focused to improve a destination’s attractiveness in this industry.

This study explores the motivations, attitudes and behaviours of tourists on themed touring routes (trails) in  Queensland and Tasmania, Australia. The results provide insight into the travellers, their preferred holiday style, motivation, patterns of planning, travel and en route behaviour, use of themed touring routes and their views on destinations. Important differences were found to exist between the touring groups in the two states.

This is the second edition of the State of the Tourism Industry report and, like the first, the aim is to provide an overview of the tourism industry in Australia through the reporting of key indicators augmented by expert commentary provided by a range of representatives from the various sectors which contribute to tourism. The report was produced in partnership with the National Tourism Alliance (NTA). This year, for the first time, a survey of operators was also undertaken with the assistance of the NTA  who distributed the online questionnaire through their member organisations. The survey asked operators to rate the issues that had been identified in the previous year’s report in terms of the impact each was having on their sector and region.

Although food and wine is an important dimension of the tourism industry, little research has been conducted into the nature or role of restaurant experiences in adding to the tourism product. This study delves into the beliefs, values and attitudes of consumers to ascertain what they value and why.

This report aims to develop a better understanding of the contribution of the restaurant sector destination’s attractiveness. It explores in detail consumers’ perceptions, values and opinions in they value in a restaurant when on holiday and why. Specifically, the report investigates consumers’ patterns, the influence of various information sources on tourists’ restaurant choice, as well as reasons for dining out when on holiday. In addition, the report attempts to understand the influence and role of restaurants in consumers’ travel destination choice.

This study included firms from Australia, New Zealand and the United Kingdom.

This report provides an estimate of the economic value of Watarrka National Park (WNP) to the Northern Territory’s Centre region. Its importance lies in assessing what tourist expenditures would be lost to the Centre if WNP did not exist. While the objective of the research was to apply the Carlsen and Wood’s economic model for protected areas to WNP, to estimate the contribution of the park to the region through tourism, this report was not based on primary data collection but on building a reasoned argument about the contribution of WNP to regional tourism expenditures. The report also aimed at providing a broad picture of past and existing markets, and contrasts some of the secondary data sources available to comment on improved estimates of traffic and visitation by tourists.
