This study aims to enhance the understanding of tourist experiences and behaviour in urban destinations by analysing the spatial movements of tourists, identifying the key attributes they are seeking in urban destinations, determining how important these attributes are to their experiences, evaluating how two urban destinations performed in relation to these attributes, and assessing whether there are key differences between different types of visitors to urban destinations. The ultimate aim of this project is to inform and guide the future governance and improved functioning of urban tourism destinations by developing a better understanding of the tourist in such settings.

This report provides estimates of the contribution of tourism to the economy of New South Wales. It replaces an earlier report released in March 2007. The estimates from the earlier report have been revised to reflect revisions to benchmark national data which were incorporated in the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) national Tourism Satellite Account (TSA) released on 11 May 2007.

The extension of TSA’s to the state or regional level is still in its infancy internationally. To develop this TSA for the state of New South Wales, we have utilised the data sources from the national TSA published by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) and statistical data from the Bureau of Tourism Research (BTR). In terms of tourism commodities and industries for New South Wales, the results are consistent with those for the national TSA.

This project aimed to identify sites on the Victorian bank of the Murray River where community values indicate that either further conservation is desired or where development is acceptable. Since the region is under pressure from population and tourism growth and a diversity of land uses, the Victorian government is considering the use of public land and the appropriateness of access to commercial and community activities. In this study, questionnaire surveys were sent to a representative sample of residents, visitors and tour operators asking them to indicate their preferences for future development and show locations of a range of values including biological, scenic, economic, recreation, therapeutic and wilderness and sites for future tourism or residential growth. Spatial analysis of the survey data using GIS revealed the locations of particular importance. On the basis of modelling using these values, these locations were predicted to be national/state parks.

The research project conducted fieldwork in a number of case studies in metropolitan and regional and rural areas of New South Wales and Victoria in order to investigate and explore the intersection between traditional and new cultural landscape precincts and the current and future patterns of Australian tourism. Cultural landscapes of tourism are diverse in character. This project compared the more ‘traditional’ cultural tourist precinct of Sydney’s Art Gallery of New South Wales and Woolloomooloo Finger Wharf with the cosmopolitan cultural diversity of ethnic precincts including Sydney’s and Melbourne’s Chinatown and Melbourne’s Little Italy, Lygon Street.

This research study aimed to examine the relationships between NPWS and its private visitor service providers (‘Lessees’). The study uses in-depth, semi-structured interviews with NPWS staff and Lessees involved in five case study partnerships to get insight into the workings of these relationships — their challenges and successes.
