PATA and UNEP have agreed through a Memorandum of Understanding to further sustainable tourism, in support of the Sustainable Tourism Programme of the 10YFP, and to mainstream sustainable consumption and production patterns in the tourism sector.

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading organization within the United Nations system in the field of environment and has as a major area of focus of its global mandate, the conservation, protection, enhancement and support of nature and natural resources, including biological diversity, worldwide. UNEP has the mandate to mainstream sustainability into tourism by demonstrating the economic, environmental, and socio-cultural benefits of sustainable tourism, and established the Global Partnership for Sustainable Tourism with the aim of improving knowledge and strengthening capacity and decision-making processes for more sustainable tourism.
UNEP hosts the 10-Year Framework of Programme (10YFP) Secretariat – a global action framework to enhance international cooperation on sustainable consumption and production (SCP) and to support the implementation of SCP policies and activities at the regional and national level, and is supporting as the 10YFP Secretariat to develop the Sustainable Tourism Programme of the 10YFP with the aim to leverage international collaboration, networks and research, stimulating innovation, replicating and scaling up SCP initiatives in the tourism sector.
